Portrait of Merrilyn Astin Tarlton, Lawyer

By Geri L. Dreiling, Esq.

Merrilyn Astin Tarlton and her partners produce Attorney at Work – a website and online resource for enterprising lawyers who want to create a career and a life that they can love. The site offers readers “one really good idea every day.”

In addition, she consults with legal organizations, lawyers and law firm management groups on their various roles as lawyers, leaders and businesspeople.

Tarlton was inducted into the inaugural class of the Legal Marketing Association’s Hall of Fame and is a lifetime Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management.

This week, Tarlton, who tweets from @astintarlton, shares some of her favorite laptop and iPhone apps with Lawyer Tech Review.

Tarlton admits she is a “Google Docs and Google Spreadsheet addict.” Google docs is a free service that allows a user to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations online from scratch or with the help of a template. The user can then choose to share the documents. Multiple users can view and make edits at the same time.

Tarlton explains that her colleagues, Mark and Joan Feldman, work out of Chicago while she’s in Colorado. All of their calendaring and project management is done on a master spreadsheet. Using Google Docs, they are able to work on the same document in real time during their bi-weekly planning conferences.

“I always want the back story,” Tarlton says. “When watching movies, I constantly check the IMDb (Internet Movie Database) on my iPhone for the details on the script, production, location and actors.” (Affiliate link)

Using IMDb’s free iPhone app, Tarlton says she can answer instantly the questions, “Where have we seen this guy before?” and “I wonder what she’s doing now?” (IMDb also offers apps for the iPad, Android and Windows 7 mobile devices.)
